Dear Mr. Chateauneuf:

Premier Jason Kenney forwarded your email regarding driver training school operations during the COVID-19 pandemic. As Minister of Alberta Transportation, I am able to provide the following information.

I understand from your school’s website that you have resumed operations as of June 3; I am pleased to see you will be following the Government of Alberta’s health guidelines as you resume operations. Alberta’s relaunch strategy puts safety first while gradually reopening businesses, resuming activities and getting people back to work. With strict safety guidelines in place, Albertans can and should confidently support Alberta businesses as we relaunch the economy.

Further details regarding restricted and non-restricted services in Alberta can be viewed online at www.alberta.ca/restricted-and-non-restricted-services.aspx. For information on the actions the Government of Alberta is taking to protect Albertans and prevent the spread of novel coronavirus, including the relaunch strategy and the latest status on road test delivery, please visit www.alberta.ca/coronavirus-info-foralbertans.aspx. For other questions on driver education and examinations, please contact Alberta Transportation’s Driver Education and Examination Standards unit by telephone at (780) 427‑8230 or by email at driverexaminations@gov.ab.ca.

Thank you for taking the time to write.

Sincerely,
Ric McIver
Minister of Transportation

Premier of Alberta

Driver Training Providers

Dear Sir/Madam

Hope your day is doing fine

Stage 1 is allowing barber shops, dental procedures, Physiotherapy, chiropractic, optometry and similar services. These services are not at a 2 meter distance.

The same could be applied to driving schools. I have never heard from the Premier Kenney or from Dr. Hinshaw any word or indications on this major industry in Alberta. We should be considered for Stage 1 following the proper Healthcare guide lines. I have outlined the conditions we can implicate.

1-The instructor will be wearing a mask

2-A mask will be offered to the student on request

3-All touch points (steering wheel, signal arm, shifting, power and park button, seat, in and out door handles, mirror and window switch) of the car will be disinfected with Isopropyl Alcohol 99% before student comes in.

4-Hand Sanitizer will be available for all students.

5- New gloves will be offered.

6- Alberta Health Record of Decision -CMOH Order 06-2020 questioner. (see attachment)

7- Only one on one could be done and up to 2-3 students per day.

I have tried a plexiglass between the student and instructor and just interferes with shoulder check, right mirror, rear view mirrors and reaching the steering wheel. Road Test examiners can do road exams by using our cars for a guarantied safer car.

All these PPE items are on line or available at certain stores.

If not Stage 1 please let us know for Stage 2.
